R. E. Ashworth was established over 85 years ago by Richard Ashworth, a local Magistrate, and later Lord Mayor of Nottingham.

R.E. Ashworth occupied premises in the early 1920’s on Stoney Street at the heart of the famous Nottingham Lace Market. During this period, Mr Ashworth’s son, Richard William Ashworth, joined the company and in later years became one of the most respected men in the Nottingham Lace Curtain Industry.

The Company prospered steadily and became well known in the Retail Trade as suppliers of Cotton Lace Curtains. Larger premises were bought on Stoney Street to cope with the increase in business, which also coincided with the transition from cotton to man-made fibres.

Sadly in 1952 the Founder of the business died and ownership passed to his son, Richard William, who by this time had thirty years experience within the trade. Under his ownership the Company continued to prosper until his retirement in April 1985.

On his retirement the business was sold to Romo Fabrics, who are one of the most respected Distributors of Upholstery Fabric & Soft Furnishings in Europe.

A Management team was already in place and the Company continued to expand rapidly which, in 1987, resulted in a relocation out of central Nottingham to the existing site in Daybrook. The much larger new premises enabled the business to expand further within a strong financial framework, and the new brand name Mirabel Designer Textiles was launched.

By 1999, Romo Fabrics continued to expand and became more involved in their own markets. They decided to offer for sale the Company to the existing Directors, who had done so much to develop the Company during the Romo years.

In August 1999, a successful management buyout was concluded, consisting of Trevor Briggs (Managing Director) and Philip Cater (Sales Director), both whom had worked under Mr Ashworth Jnr and have between them over 60 years experience within the Company.

With the onset of the 21st Century, the new owners instigated a new dynamic Sales and Management team to build on the strengths of the brand and drive the business forward, looking at new exciting products, but not forgetting its core ideals.

In the present day, R.E. Ashworth (Mirabel) has arguably the strongest range of Lace, Embroidered Voiles and Ready made Panels in the UK, together with Curtains and Accessories. With the continuity of its staff, vast experience within the Trade and strong financial base, it continues to offer exciting new products, ideas and developments to the ever changing Retail Market.
